AUBURN — Installation of a bigger water main will shut down Lake Street at Davis Avenue for two days beginning Tuesday.
The work will kick off a longer project replacing the 6-inch water main under the street with an 8-inch main and connecting it to a 16-inch main.
Michael Broadbent, assistant superintendent for the Auburn Water District, said workers will install about half of the new main this fall, finishing the project next spring.
“It’s a main artery that will increase circulation of water,” Broadbent said. “It may give some people more pressure, and some may get more reliable service.”
Broadbent said the district has installed temporary water lines to many of the homes along the northwestern end of the project to make sure their household water is not interrupted.
“When we shut down the main on Lake Street, they will get their service through those lines,” he said. “They started going up Wednesday and we’ve reached to all the homeowners. We will be turning those on Monday, and shutting the main on Lake Street and beginning the work at Davis and Lake.”
The work will shut down the intersection for the two days and drivers should plan to detour around the intersection.
The work will continue Thursday but will only close one lane for the duration. Northbound traffic will be detoured onto Fern, to Granite and Davis streets and back to Lake Street for about a month. Southbound lanes will continue to use Lake Street. Construction is planned daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
