FRYEBURG — A threat found in a girl’s bathroom forced the lockdown of Fryeburg Academy on Wednesday as police searched the school for explosives.

None were found.

Police were called to the school at about 1:30 p.m. Students were taken to a secure area while Maine State Police explosive-sniffing dogs were sent in to search the school.

After two and a half hours, investigators classified the threat as low level and non-credible.

Fryeburg police interviewed students and processed evidence as their investigation continued.

Police did not say what kind of threat had been found in the school bathroom.

“Due to the nature of the threat, we decided to sweep the entire campus using explosive-detecting K-9s,” Fryeburg Police Chief Joshua Potvin said. “The safety of the students and staff is our main concern in these types of events.”

The threat was the second at the academy this year, police said.
