AUGUSTA — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will touch down in Bangor next week with the national spotlight shining ever brighter on Maine’s 2nd Congressional District.

Trump’s fourth visit to Maine during his presidential run is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Cross Insurance Center on Main Street in Bangor. The visit will mark Trump’s second campaign stop in the Queen City this year. He’s also appeared twice in Portland.

The nominee’s focus on Maine — including sending his son and daughter-in-law on a 2nd District tour Thursday — is a clear indication of the importance of Maine in Trump’s path to the White House.

Maine has been thrust into battleground state status this year because of polling that has Trump dominant in the 2nd District and competitive with Democrat Hillary Clinton statewide. If Trump takes the 2nd District and statewide vote, he takes three of Maine’s four electoral votes.

Clinton’s large lead in Maine’s more liberal 1st District is probably insurmountable for the Republican. But it won’t be for lack of effort. No presidential candidate in the modern political era has made this many campaign stops in Maine.

Nevertheless, Clinton’s campaign is sending Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who easily beat her in Maine’s Democratic nominating caucuses in March, to Bangor on Friday to try to convince his progressive supporters to vote for the nominee, who also lost Maine’s caucuses to Barack Obama in 2008.

In the days prior to his Maine visit, Trump will campaign in places more used to swing-state status: Pennsylvania, Florida and Ohio. Most polls indicate that those states remain clearly in play, and all three are pivotal in each candidate’s calculation of a road to the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the White House.

Maine’s 2nd District congressional rematch between first-term Republican U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin and former Democratic state Sen. Emily Cain is also garnering major attention and vast political spending as a congressional battleground.

It’s uncertain what the dynamic of the turbulent presidential race will be by the time the Republican nominee takes the Cross Center stage. Trump and Clinton will have another debate between then and now — this Sunday — and the final presidential debate is four days after Trump next visits Maine, on Oct. 19 in Las Vegas.
