DIXFIELD — The Regional School Unit 10 board Tuesday approved using one of the three portable classrooms at Mountain Valley Middle School in Mexico as a
utility building.

Also, Wayne Strout of Buckfield was hired as music teacher at Hartford-Sumner Elementary School for one year. He holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in music, and has served as a longtime substitute teacher. He was a member of the former School Administrative District 39 board in Buckfield, and had taught at Edward Little High School in Auburn.

The resignation of longtime special education teacher Marie Tanguay. She is retiring as of Dec. 31.

The board also learned of the following appointments: Alison Stimson, educational technician at the Pennacook Learning Center; Bonnie Dyment and Meegan Swan, educational technicians at Meroby Elementary School; Amanda Blood, special education technician at Dirigo Elementary School; Steve Garcia, Karen O’Kelly and Ernie Cloutier, van drivers; Kathy Robbins, Hartford-Sumner Elementary School bus driver/custodian; and Nicole Lavorgna Pinkham, long-term substitute school nurse at Meroby Elementary School.

In other matters, the board welcomed Mountain Valley High School senior Travis Palmer as the new school representative to the board.

There will be a joint meeting with the Oxford Hills Technical School board at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 20.

Regarding efforts by Canton, Carthage, Dixfield and Peru to leave the district, informational meetings are scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 13, at Dirigo Elementary School in Peru, Monday, Oct. 17 at the Carthage Town Office, and Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Dirigo High School in Dixfield. All begin at 6 p.m.

The four towns once formed SAD 21, which merged with SAD 43 in Rumford and SAD 39 in Buckfield under the state-mandated school consolidation in 2011.

The withdrawal effort began more than a year ago when residents said they believed reforming their district would lower costs.

The other eight towns in RSU 10 are Rumford, Mexico, Byron, Roxbury, Buckfield, Sumner, Hartford and Hanover.

The next RSU 10 board meeting is Monday, Oct. 24.
