FRYEBURG — Fryeburg Academy’s math team, Fryeburg Gold, took first place at its math meet on Oct. 5 with 318 points.

In second was Hebron Academy with 245 points.

Erik Porter, team co-captain, said he feels hopeful about his team’s prospects despite losing half of its top performers this year.

“The team we’ve made is turning out great,” he said. “We lost a lot of great members, but everyone has shown a lot of improvement, and it’s really made the difference. Even with the loss of half of our top team, we’ve managed to move up in our rankings from last year. I’m very proud of everyone.”

Fryeburg Gold is ranked second in the state out of 115 teams, and has four members in the Top 30 out of approximately 1,000 of the best math students in the state. They are Brain Gong, 28th; Suhyong Oh, 19th; Erik Porter, 13th; and Mike Chen, co-captain, 11th.

The team has its sights set on state finals.

“Other than the regular season meets, our next big competition is state finals, where we hope to stay above our closest rivals — John Bapst and Cheverus,” said Porter.

Last year five students were invited to the national finals; Porter and his teammates hope for a repeat.
