RUMFORD — Don Hamann of Rumford, a state-licensed medical marijuana caregiver since 2011, will hold a second seminar on the merits of cannabis oil from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the American Legion hall.

His first one in July at the Legion hall drew 96 people to hear how cannabis oil can help fight heroin and opioid addiction. Hamann said he heard from a lot of people who wished they had attended, so he is holding another.

The theme will be “cannabis oil kills cancer, pain and helps with most other ailments.”

Speakers will include:

* Dr. Dustin Sulak of Manchester, a leader in medical cannabis and integrative medicine;

* Sean Judge of the New England Veterans Alliance Inc. speaking on behalf of veterans; and

* Catherine Lewis, chairwoman/director of education for the Medical Marijuana Caregivers of Maine.

Admission is free and snacks and refreshments are provided.

Hamann, 58, said cannabis oil has made a difference in his life.

“I was on 10 or 11 pills for 10 or 12 years for prostate, feet pain, blood pressure, cholesterol,” he said.

“I’d been 200 pounds my whole life. I went down to 160 pounds. The doctors kept sending me down to other specialists, blaming it on all these other things and giving me more pills,” he said.

Hamann said he stopped drugs, alcohol, cigarettes — everything — about six years ago.

Three summers ago, while working on his house, his wife, also a licensed medical marijuana caregiver, made some brownies with medical cannabis in them.

“So I ate some brownies and that night, when I went to sleep, I slept the whole night through, Hamann said. “That hadn’t happened for four or five years. The next morning, I got up and wondered what it was and thought it was a fluke thing. So that night, I had my wife make the same meal and I ate at the same time, and the two brownies at 3 o’clock. I then slept the whole night through again. I had to have them every night to sleep,” he said.

“Three years later, I still have to. After two weeks of taking these, my foot pain was gone. The arthritis in my shoulder, my knuckle, my back — all my different types of pain — was gone.”
