1933 – 2016

RUMFORD — Leon A. Poirier, 83, of Knox Street, formerly of Dixfield, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Rumford Community Home following a brief illness with cancer.

He was born in Rumford on Aug. 17, 1933, a son of Nicholas and Diana (Paulin) Poirier. Leon was educated in Rumford schools and was a graduate of Stephens High School, Class of 1953.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, achieving the rank of corporal. Leon married Yvette Roy on Aug. 24, 1957; together, they celebrated 59 years of marriage.

He was employed for over 40 years with Boise Cascade Paper Co. and was a member of their 25 year and 40 year clubs. Leon was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior, and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He enjoyed playing pool, tennis and fishing.

Surviving are his wife, Yvette (Roy) Poirier of Rumford; a son, Mark Poirier and wife, Amy, of Washington; a sister, Yvette Gallant of Rumford; a brother, Marcel Poirier and wife, Audrey, of Pittsfield, Mass.; three sisters-in-law, Lillian Poirier of Rumford, Orella Poirier of Mexico and Elizabeth Poirier of Waltham, Mass.; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Yvonne Gallant; and three brothers, Tony, Edgar and Ernest Poirier.
