WILTON — It’s not too late to enter Saturday’s Pumpkin Derby, organizer Elizabeth Shibles said Wednesday.

The event is part of the Wilton Scarecrow Fest & Pumpkin Derby set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Bass Park on Lake Road and the area around the boat ramp on Wilson Lake.

Pumpkin car kits, complete with directions for applying wheels and axles to pumpkins, are available for a charge at Wilton Hardware.

There will be a pit stop for those who need help aligning the axles and wheels from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at Collins Enterprises Inc. on Route 2, she said.

Last year there were 15 derby racers. The committee hopes to double the number this year, she said.

“Decorate a pumpkin and come join the fun,” she said.

The pumpkin cars need to be available for viewing from noon to 12:45 p.m. Saturday on the bridge to the boat ramp, she said. The cars will then line up on Lake Road for the 1 p.m. derby.

The festival features activities, including a scarecrow contest, costume parade and polar bear plunge into the lake.

From 10 to 11:30 a.m., participants can bring their scarecrows to Bass Park for judging or make a scary scarecrow there, Shibles said.

At 10:30 a.m. there is face painting, along with Cassandra the Witch storytime and carving, painting or decorating pumpkins.

The Fit Girls 5K Run along Canal Street and Lake Road begins at 10 a.m.

A costume parade from Bass Park to the Polar Bear Plunge starts at 11:30 a.m.

Western Maine Community Action will hold its Freezin’ For a Reason at noon at the boat ramp. Teams will top off their fundraising with a plunge into the cool water.

A variety of lunch opportunities are available in a special food court or people can bring their own picnic lunch, Shibles said.

The food court features Calzolaio Pasta Co.’s pizza, ice cream and pumpkin floats; chicken fingers and crab rangoons from the New Great Wall; Mexican food from El Toro; and a baked potato spread by the Congregational Church. Western Maine Play Museum will offer hot coffee and cocoa beginning at 10 a.m.

Prizes for best costume, scarecrow, derby car and pumpkin will be announced at 12:30 p.m.

The event is sponsored by The Wilton Group and The Wilton Events Committee.
