FARMINGTON — The attorney for an associate director for the Maine Office of Substance Abuse accused of driving drunk has entered a plea of not guilty on her behalf in a Franklin County court.

A Franklin County sheriff’s deputy arrested Joan Smyrski, 62, of Jefferson on Sept. 25 on a misdemeanor count of operating under the influence. She was released from jail the following day on $150 cash bail. She was scheduled to make an initial appearance on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

The Sheriff’s Office investigated a complaint of erratic driving on Rangeley Road in Avon the evening of Sept. 25.

Smyrski’s attorney, Walter McKee, waived an initial appearance and entered the written plea, which was received by the court Oct. 19.

No date has been scheduled for Smyrski’s next appearance.

Her responsibilities at Maine Department of Health and Human Services include associate director for treatment and recovery in the Office of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services, according to the department’s website, .
