1943 – 2016

LEWISTON — Mary Ita Fitzgerald, 73, of Sumner, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 19, at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Mary was born in County Limerick, Ballyhahill, Ireland, on Aug. 23, 1943, a daughter to James Mulcaire and Ellen McCans Mulcaire. She was educated in Ireland and, at age 15, she came to the United States sponsored by relatives. She then earned her high school diploma and went to work and saved money to sponsor her sister to come to America.

She married Robert M. Fitzgerald on March 16, 1965, and they moved to Sumner in 1973, traveling to Maine from California.

Mary worked at Norway Footwear for many years, and later in the office at O.T. to Play in Norway, from which she retired in 2015.

She enjoyed reading, canoeing and hiking.

Surviving are her husband of Sumner; one son, Cody Fitzgerald of Sumner; a daughter, Claudette Fitzgerald and her partner, Mike Dillon, of Klamath Falls, Ore.; two brothers, Joe Mulcaire of England and Tom Mulcaire of Australia; a sister, Ita Murphy and her husband, Bill, of Leavittown, N.Y.; and several other brothers and sisters.
