AUGUSTA (AP) — Two GOP senators facing allegations of double-dipping will try to clear their names at a legislative ethics meeting.
The Senate committee on conduct and ethics will meet Thursday morning to discuss alleged misuse of taxpayer funds.
Democratic Sens. John Patrick and Justin Alfond have alleged that travel reimbursement records show Republican Sens. Andre Cushing and Ronald Collins received a combined $5,500 in reimbursements for expenses already paid for by independent groups or campaign donors.
The alleged double-dipping dates back to campaign finance reports that Cushing filed this year and Collins filed in 2014. Both called for a hearing while denying they broke rules.
Maine’s ethics commission Wednesday agreed to investigate Cushing’s campaign finances following a request by his sister Laura McIntyre, who’s also suing Cushing for misusing family company assets.
