KENNEBUNK — Leavitt came in as a heavy underdog but played like a team that knows a thing or two about postseason football.

And it was almost enough. But not quite, as the No. 8 Hornets fell to No. 1 Kennebunk 16-14 in a Class B South quarterfinal Saturday.

Leavitt took a 8-0 lead on a 50-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, but the Rams responded with a touchdown and a field goal to lead 9-8 at halftime.

Kennebunk (9-0) added a touchdown in the third quarter to go up 16-8.

The Hornets threw another long scoring strike, this one for 66 yards, but the two-point conversion failed and they still trailed 16-14 with 4:28 remaining in the third. That score help up, ending Leavitt’s season with a 2-7 record.

Cheverus 30, Lewiston 14

PORTLAND — A 23-point hole was too much for the Lewiston Blue Devils to climb out of, and they fell 30-14 to Cheverus in Saturday’s Class A North football quarterfinal.

The Stags led 23-0 at halftime. Lewiston (2-7) got on the scoreboard early in the third quarter when Brock Belanger caught a 23-yard touchdown pass to make it 23-6.

Cheverus (5-4) tacked on another score in the fourth quarter to make it 30-6. Then, Desmond Jackson scored the Blue Devils’ final touchdown of the season, hauling in a 43-yard touchdown catch. Tanner Cortes added the two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 30-14.
