FARMINGTON — The Arts Institute of Western Maine will present a concert by the southern Maine jazz septet Novel Jazz at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, in Nordica Auditorium at Merrill Hall at the University of Maine at Farmington.
The band regularly plays throughout Maine, and has performed for Maine Public Radio. Collectively, the group has over 200 years of playing experience.
Members are Barney Balch, trombonist and leader; Mike Mitchell, trumpeter; Bryan Jones, alto saxophonist; Bill Manning, drummer; Herb Maine, bassist; David Clarke, guitarist; and Mickey Felder, pianist.
Novel Jazz concentrates on the swing music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Balch has traveled on several occasions to the Duke Ellington Collection at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., to collect and arrange lesser-known works from the Ellington and Strayhorn’s 3,000-composition repertoire.
Admission is $12; students with ID admitted free.
