HOLLIS — A former York deputy fire chief is dead after crashing his tractor trailer about 5 a.m. Friday on Killick Pond Road.
Police say the driver pulled out of the Poland Spring water plant and hit a power pole, tangled the lines, and brought down a second pole.
Troopers identified the victim as 66-year-old Samuel Horn, the former deputy chief for the York Beach Fire Department.
Troopers say first responders found Horn slumped over the wheel with his seat belt on and without a pulse.
Power was knocked out for several hours in the area, but the Poland Spring bottling plant didn’t lose power thanks to a backup generator.
Troopers say Horn wasn’t speeding.
“He was just cruising along, he had a witness behind him, they saw the vehicle go off the road, there was no acceleration, there was no trying to re-correct back onto the roadway,” Corporal Doug Cropper, Maine State Police, said.
Troopers believe Horn may have had a medical emergency that caused the crash, but they are waiting on an autopsy for confirmation.
