FARMINGTON — The state Tuesday dismissed sexual abuse charges against a Jay man because of insufficient evidence, according to a court document.

Steven M. Dumeny, 33, was arrested in May after Jay police and New York State Police conducted an investigation.

Dumeny adamantly denied the charges May 23 during a court appearance.

The state had not presented the case to two grand juries and decided to dismiss the charges, Assistant District Attorney Joshua Robbins said Wednesday.

The case, which involved two girls, is still under investigation, Robbins said, and he is waiting for more information from out of state. He is unsure where it will lead, he said.

A motion to suppress evidence was not heard Tuesday.

Attempts to contact Dumeny’s attorney, George Hess, were unsuccessful.
