OXFORD — Police took an armed man into custody for psychological evaluation early Friday morning after shots were fired inside his residence on Route 121, and he barricaded himself inside.

Lt. Michael Ward of the Oxford Police Department said that at 6:16 a.m. officers responded to the report of a man with a handgun in the road near Keiser Homes.

“The man who made the 911 call said that the suspect had told him that he had shot two people inside his house, which is located in the area of Keiser Homes,” Ward said. “He then barricaded himself inside his house.”

After police arrived, Ward said there was a brief standoff while officers “tried to figure out what was going on.”

Ward said police called the man, who came outside with his “firearm out.” Oxford police officers Dan Hastings and Zach Bisson asked the man to put the gun down, which he did, and they were able to peacefully take him into custody at about 6:45 a.m.

Police searched the man’s home and found “no bodies” and “no sign that anybody had been shot,” Ward said.

“Nobody was injured,” he added. “We’re always happy when situations like this end with nobody hurt.”

Ward said he would not release the man’s name because he was “not officially arrested.”

“He was taken into custody, and he was later taken to St. Mary’s (Regional Medical Center) for a psychological evaluation,” Ward said. “We’ll write up our report, submit it to the District Attorney’s office, and they’ll decide whether to pursue charges.”

Route 121 was shut down for two hours and a command center was set up at the Big Apple gas station at Route 26 and Route 121.

Officers with the Maine State Police, Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, Oxford Rescue, Paris Police Department and the Norway Police Department also responded to the scene.
