PORTLAND — Maine U.S. Sens. Angus King and Susan Collins are among a group of more than 80 lawmakers who are calling for improved mail service by reforming the U.S. Postal Service.
The reform drive is led by U.S. Sens. Heidi Heitkamp, a North Dakota Democrat, and Jerry Moran, a Kansas Republican. The lawmakers are signing on to a reform proposal that says postal service performance has declined with processing plant consolidations and post office hour reductions.
The lawmakers say they want enforcement of improved mail delivery standards. They are calling for improvements to postal reform legislation that’s currently in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The key pieces of the lawmakers’ proposal include making mail service and delivery more reliable and improving accountability and transparency at the Postal Service.
