RUMFORD — The Chisholm Ski Club will celebrate its 100th anniversary during the 2016-17 winter season, with many events at Black Mountain Ski Area.
The kickoff event will be the showing of the Warren Miller ski film “Here, There & Everywhere” on Saturday, Dec. 3, at Black Mountain Lodge.
Doors open at 6 p.m.; movie starts at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $10 and seating is limited. They can be purchased at Black Mountain Ski Area, at Davis Florist on Congress Street, at Mountain Valley High School, at the Ski Depot in Jay and online at www.eventbrite.com/e/warren-millers-here-there-everywhere-tickets-28905350682.
The centennial celebration will continue with the return of the historic Winter Carnival on Feb. 3, 4 and 5, 2017.
The club is looking for Carnival Queen candidates to sell carnival tickets and hold other fundraisers. The candidate who raises the most money will be crowned queen at the Carnival Banquet.
The competition is open to candidates ages 18 to 30, and the fundraising will run from Dec. 1 through Jan. 31, 2017. Each candidate is asked to raise a minimum of $500 and will retain 10 percent of her earnings. The winning candidate will also win a lodging and dining package to The Wentworth, an inn in Jackson, New Hampshire, and $250 to be used for skiing, golfing or shopping in nearby North Conway, New Hampshire.
Money raised will go toward the Chisholm Ski Club’s vision of the Youth Development Ski Program.
From 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, 2017, at Black Mountain Lodge, there will be a book-signing with author Scott Andrews and his ski history book titled, “A Century on Skis: The First Hundred Years of Chisholm Ski Club in Rumford, Maine.” At 7 p.m., there will be a torchlight parade on the mountain, followed by a comedy performance with the Maine Hysterical Society at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, Feb. 4, the John Roderick Marathon Cross Country ski race begins at 9 a.m. The Winter Carnival Banquet is at 6 p.m., with the crowning of the Carnival Queen at 7:30 p.m. The Kahtunes will provide music for the Carnival dance.
The Winter Carnival festivities conclude on Sunday, Feb. 5, with the return of the alpine race, the “Telstar Schuss” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The format of the race will be a dual giant slalom pay-per-run race with different age classes.
Throughout the Carnival weekend, there will be an exhibit of Chisholm Ski Club memorabilia in the Black Mountain Lodge, sponsored by the Ski Museum of Maine.
