Each had a hat trick as the Scarborough Red Storm defeated the Yarmouth/Gray-New Gloucester/Freeport Clippers 9-2 Saturday afternoon in a girls’ hockey contest.
The Red Storm got the offense rolling when Veilleux set herself in front of the Clippers’ crease. Lauren Topchick fed her the puck from behind the goal line for a goal at the 4:52 mark of the opening period. Carrie Timpson notched the secondary assist.
“We have been working a lot on that in practice, a lot of cycling, give-and-gos, going down low,” Scarborough coach Caitlin D’Amour said. “We’ve been playing for three weeks, which is very helpful.”
Topchick made it 2-0 at the 8:31 mark of the opening frame when she put the puck in the net after a scramble in front of the crease. Assists went to Ivy DiBiase and Veilleux.
Bogdanovich then potted two goals to put the Red Storm up 4-0 after the first period. Her first goal came with 4:40 remaining in the period with the assists going to Logan Bruns and Timpson. Her second goal came with 51 seconds remaining when Timpson notched her third assist of the period and Cara Reynolds added the secondary helper.
Topchick found Veilleux again to start the second period at the 1:15 mark, with DiBiase picking up the second assist on the play.
The Clippers played more competitively in the second period, and Katie Clemmer got them on the board 37 seconds after Veilleux goal.
“I think when they finally started to settle down after (Scarborough) scored those first few goals on us,” Clippers coach Megan Vaughan said. “They realized we aren’t out of this game, they settled down and kept playing hard and being aggressive on their forecheck.”
The shots were more even in the second period — Scarborough had the 9-8 advantage — after the Red Storm outshot the Clippers 7-1 in the first.
Topchick notched her second of the game at the 12:08 mark of the second period. The goal was set up by DiBiase and Veilleux.
Veilleux’s third goal came 1:31 into the third on the power play. Bogdanovich made it 8-1 with her hat trick goal and Grace Murphy capped off the scoring for Scarborough. Caroline Grant scored the Clippers’ second goal.
