MONMOUTH — Haley Fletcher had scoring on her mind during her senior season of soccer.

The Monmouth forward had already established herself as a scorer, but coming into 2016 her focus was homed in on when she scored and breaking the school record.

The record — 72 goals, held by Fletcher’s 2013 teammate Kylie Kemp — fell in the sixth game of the season.

“That was pretty awesome,” Fletcher, who finishes her career with 83 goals, said. “I had been working for it all four years because my freshman year my brother broke the boys’ school record, and someone I played with freshman year had the record.

“I really wanted to do that and I was really excited when I broke it.”

Fletcher had been a prolific scorer since early in her career — she scored a career-high 30 goals as a sophomore — but she predominantly feasted on the lesser teams the Mustangs faced. She wanted more goals in big games and against the best teams.

“It’s tough to score when you play against the real good teams,” Monmouth coach Gary Trafton said. “At the end, she knew that she had to come up big for us, because people were counting on her, and she didn’t mind the pressure.”

Fletcher said she doesn’t have a secret to her scoring prowess, and chalks it up to years of experience and good passes by teammates.

Her favorite of the 20-plus goals she scored this season came off a nice pass from a special source: Fletcher’s younger sister Audrey.

“It was a perfect pass in from my sister,” Haley Fletcher said. “She played the ball right over the top of defenders, and I just one-touched it into the goal.”

In a few ways, Fletcher’s season came together on that play. She was still in pursuit of the school record at the time, and it occurred in an early-season win over fellow Class C South powerhouse Madison.
