(Photo Caption) CHRISTMAS LIGHTS AGLOW — One of the home decorating schemes seen by The Sun cameramen in traveling about the city, Sunday, was this one at 14 Drew St., Lewiston. The small home features not only a door decoration but a group of carolers and Santa with his reindeer. At the far left it would appear that Santa already has left a bag of gifts under the lighted tree. The picture was taken at the Normand R. Poulin home.

The Lewiston Housing Authority this week is closing its waiting lists for Section 8 and public housing. “We are so swamped … that people aren’t going to be served for two to three years,” said Sandra Stemmer, the authority’s executive director. “It seems inappropriate to have them hold out hope.” There is a total of 677 applications on file for various types of housing the authority offers. Some families file requests for more than one type of assistance. Public housing — like Blake Street Towers and Hillview Apartments —is owned by the authority. Federal Section 8 vouchers and certificates subsidize rents in private buildings. Depending on who holds them, some travel with tenants, others stay with landlords, Stemmer said. A request from staff to suspend taking applications was “really hashed out” by the board of commissioners before approval, Slemmer said. “When we look at how many we can serve in a year … we feel it’s too long a wait for them,” she said. The lists were closed about a year ago and reopened in
May. “Other housing authorities never close,” she said. Some of them allow eight- or nine-year waiting periods.
