OTISFIELD — The Ordinance and Policy Review Committee will continue its development of a sign ordinance when it meets Thursday, Dec. 15, Chairman Joe Zilinsky said Wednesday.

The committee typically has questions or tasks assigned to it by the Board of Selectmen or Planning Board, which determines the agenda for the meetings, he said.

“Over the summer, some people were putting up random signs along the road, and I think the select board thought it might be a good idea to see what we can do in the way of coming up with an ordinance that could address that,” Zilinsky said.

The official request for the committee to look into a sign ordinance came in September, Zilinsky said, though other issues have caused the committee to delay discussion.

“It’s been percolating its way to the front of our agenda for a while now,” he said.

The committee’s first order of business in regard to discussion of a sign ordinance will be to review ordinances that other towns have drafted, Zilinsky said.

“There’s no point in us reinventing the wheel,” he said. “We’ll probably start with looking at other ordinances. The town of Newry has posted a pretty detailed ordinance on their website, so we’ll probably start there and see how their language fits with Otisfield.”

Zilinsky said that when the committee finalizes anything involving the ordinance, it has to be submitted to the Board of Selectmen.

The committee will also review the language in current ordinances to ensure that they coordinate with the definitions in their recently approved “definitions for the town of Otisfield ordinance.”
