1922 – 2017

SOUTH PARIS — Florence Mabel Flanders, 94, of Norway passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at the Maine Veterans’ Home following a long hard fought battle with Alzheimer’s.

She was born in Otisfield on Dec. 3, 1922, the daughter of Nathaniel and Ruby Mae Jillson Green. Florence graduated from Norway High School and married Franklin Flanders in 1940. She worked in the shipyard during World War II and then at Burnham & Morrill and B.E. Cole shoe shop. She was also proud of her days in the lumber camps throughout New England with Frank. She had been a homemaker all of her life and was known for her wonderful cooking, particularly her chocolate chip cookies. Florence loved camping, sewing, gardening and collecting bells. She and Frank loved to travel with their truck and camper around New England and occasionally to Florida. She even cross-country skied into her 70s. Florence was a private, shy person, but always lit up when Franklin entered a room. Their relationship was the definition of true love.

She is survived by her husband of 76 years, Franklin “Dad”; her brother, Frank Green; her daughter, Eleanor Jean Thompson; daughter-in-law, Ellen Morse Flanders (Lou) Bernier; grandchildren, Kelly Ann (Abel) Rugg, Vicky Lynn Phillips (Randall) Withee, Eric and Arthur; great-grandchildren, Melinda Sue Rugg, Mariah Ellen Kimball, Cody Lee “Little Man” Phillips; many nieces and nephews; and the Pleasant Street neighbors.

She was predeceased by her parents; two sons, Franklin L. Flanders Jr. and Frankie Lee Flanders; a brother, Babe; and a grandson, Jeffrey Lee.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Maine Veterans’ Home for their compassionate care.
