Updated 10:20 a.m.: WELLS — A Waldoboro man was killed Friday morning after a pickup truck he was driving hit a plow truck on the Maine Turnpike.

Troopers say 48-year-old Michael Sands of Waldoboro was killed instantly when the pickup truck hit the rear of a turnpike plow truck in the far-left northbound lane. The plow truck driver is reported to have minor injuries.

WGME reports a tractor-trailer crashed earlier on the Maine Turnpike southbound. That crash pushed a section of the guardrail into the northbound lane. The plow truck stopped there to block the far northbound lane when the pickup slammed into the back of the plow truck.

Maine State Police say northbound traffic at Mile 16 has been reduced to one lane and warn drivers to expect delays in that area.

Troopers expect northbound traffic will continue to be backed up until the crash site is cleared. They expect that to happen by 11 a.m.
