The recent killing of a horse in Saint Agatha by an alleged drunk driver breaks my heart — “Driver charged with OUI after horse struck, killed” (Jan. 27).
As someone who has had the unfortunate experience of losing an animal companion, I know something of the grief the guardians must feel for the death of their beloved horse. I hope they will be able to recall only good memories to help them with their feelings of loss.
It upsets me that the man is being charged only with an OUI when an innocent animal has died. That horse valued its life just as much as people value their own. The suffering of the horse and its guardians is important and should not be taken lightly.
Why is it that if a person is killed the charge is much more serious, but no one bats an eye if the victim is a horse?
A life is a life.
