EUSTIS — A fast-moving fire believed to have started by a spark from a grinder destroyed a house and attached garage at Grand View Estates late Saturday afternoon.

Homeowner Dave Morris was able to escape uninjured but it is believed a cat perished in the fire, Fire Chief Sprague Wise said Monday.

Morris was doing some grinding in the garage, turned around to work on something else and when he turned back fire was moving up the walls, Wise said.

Morris tried to put it out but was unsuccessful. He grabbed what he could and got out, Wise said.

A passerby called in the fire at about 5:11 p.m.

The structure is open beam construction and the fire spread quickly. When firefighters arrived the house and garage were fully engulfed in flames, the chief said.

More than 20 firefighters from Eustis, Carrabassett Valley, Rangeley and Farmington responded.

The house was leveled, Wise said. It is insured. Morris is staying with friends.
