MECHANIC FALLS — The Town Council on Monday approved the Fire and Rescue Department’s request to purchase two new vehicles for up to $110,000.

The intent is to replace the Ford F-250 truck with an F-250 with extended cab. The old vehicle could transport two firefighters with gear, while the new one will accommodate four.

Because the department is no longer transporting injured or sick people, it intends to replace the ambulance with a vehicle that provides standard emergency services. It is looking for something like a Ford Escalade XL, an SUV.

In other business, the council approved a request by the Recreation Committee to use space out to the sanitary district fence as a soccer field. The field will be used for the summer recreation program.

The council nominated a resident for the town’s Spirit of America award and decided to whom the annual town report will be dedicated. Both names will be kept private at the present time.

The council accepted Melanie Judd’s resignation from the Library Committee and appointed Dan Gurney to the Planning Board.

Town Manager Koriene Low told councilors she and Business Manager Lisa Prevost are working on the town budget and intend to present it to the council and Budget Committee on March 2.
