LEWISTON — An elderly man who was hospitalized Tuesday morning after his Jeep collided with a car on Route 26 in Poland has been listed in critical condition, a spokeswoman at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston said Wednesday.

William Burnham, 79, of Lakeville was driving south when his 2002 Jeep SUV apparently crossed the centerline into the path of a 2011 Subaru owned and driven by Collins Boland, 28, of Salem, Massachusetts, shortly after 8 a.m. near the Lions Club, authorities said.

The impact was to the front of the Subaru and the passenger side of the Jeep. The Jeep was pushed up onto the guardrail and snowbank, Gagne said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Boland and a passenger were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Gagne said investigators are looking into the possibility that Burnham may have suffered a medical event before the crash.
