LEWISTON — William Paul Young, best known as the author of “The Shack,” will discuss the difference between being spiritual and being religious in a filmed interview at Lifetree Café.

The film will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at South Lewiston Baptist Church, 1919 Lisbon Road.

Nearly 30 percent of Americans identify themselves as spiritual but not religious, and the trend is growing. Young’s bestseller has prompted a national discussion of the difference between spirituality and religion.

“I make a distinction between the church as an organization and the church as people,” Young said. “Biblically speaking, the church is people. It’s only people. They didn’t have the buildings, the structures, or platforms. It’s simply people.”

The Lifetree event, titled “Spiritual but Not Religious,” offers participants the opportunity to explore the issue in a safe, open environment. Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable setting. Admission to the 60-minute event is free.
