AUGUSTA — Miss a handful of point-blank shots and watch the Boothbay Seahawks come to life.

Mt. Abram had ample opportunity to score, especially in the opening quarter, but the 10th-ranked Roadrunners (11-9) had an arduous time getting the ball in the hoop.

Mt. Abram’s stale shooting opened the door for second-ranked Boothbay (18-1) to glide away with a 60-21 victory in a Class C South girls’ basketball quarterfinal game at the Augusta Civic Center on Monday.

Boothbay goes on to face No. 3 Monmouth Academy, which beat Waynflete Academy 45-40, at the Augusta Civic Center on Thursday.

By halftime, the Seahawks built a 32-10 lead and had a firm a handle on the resistant Roadrunners, who refused to call it quits until the final buzzer.

“We don’t have any quit in us,” Mt. Abram coach Larry Donald said. “And we couldn’t throw it in the ocean … especially early in the game before they started creeping on us. I mean we make a few shots, we stay in it.

“Like I said, the girls, they don’t quit. Our goal was to get back to Augusta because they haven’t been there for fives years — something like that. We got here. We played a team that is predicted to go win it all and we lost. No arguing with you, they are the better team. They are a good team. No doubt about it.”

Senior forward Page Brown and sophomore guard Faith Blethen each scored 15 points for the Seahawks, while teammate junior guard Sydney Meader added 14.

“We got in a little bit of a rhythm and settled in offensively,” Boothbay coach Tanner Grover said. “Some times the first one is always the toughest one and to get in that rhythm and establish what you want to do.

“Sydney Meader was fantastic. Her defensive energy out front on our press and running the floor on transition and finishing transition. I mean she put together a heckuva game. I was very happy for her.”

Mt. Abram’s offense could only muster two points in the first quarter and finally scored with just over two minutes left. The Seahawks also had trouble finding the basket in that quarter, scoring just over three minutes into that quarter.

Sophomore guard Summer Ross scored 12 points and hit a pair of 3-pointers for the Roadrunners.

There was a bright moment for the Roadrunners when senior forward Alora Ross, who suffered a serious knee injury that sidelined her for the rest of season, saw action for two minutes and scored two points. Ross was named a 2017 McDonald’s All Star, but she wont be able to play due to knee surgery.

“It was good to get her in on the court and let her get her basket in this game because she can’t play in the McDonald’s game, obviously,” Donald said. “She wanted to get on the court and (Boothbay coach Tanner Grover) said he would back off from her for a minute and we backed off from a girl that he wanted to score. It was kind of a gentlemen’s agreement and that was good.”
