AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine’s bobcat hunting season is ending for the year.

The state allows a bobcat hunting season every winter. It began on Dec. 1 and ends on Tuesday.

Bobcat hunting has been a contentious subject in neighboring New Hampshire. That state proposed issuing 50 bobcat permits through a lottery, but opponents said that could cause the animals to be exploited for their pelts.

Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts and Quebec all have bobcat seasons.

Maine is also the host of a fox hunt that ends on Feb. 28. Most of the state’s most popular hunting seasons take place in the fall. Those include bear, deer and moose.
