DIXFIELD — The Regional School Unit 56 board of directors Tuesday discussed sharing several services with RSU 10, Interim Superintendent Brenda Gammon said Wednesday.

“The RSU 10 superintendent (Deborah Alden) approached me to see if RSU 56 would consider sharing (the services of) the Buildings, Grounds and Transportation administration and assistants to the administrator,” Gammon said.

“What that means is that group — the people who are in that office — would move up to the Rumford office, and they would oversee the people in RSU 56,” she said. “We would pay for that service.”

The board tabled the services in question and will discuss them at a committee meeting, she said. The board may vote on the question at its next meeting, she said.

Alden also asked Gammon about the possibility of sharing English Language Learners and social worker services.

“I have to find out how much the need is with RSU 56 presently and how much time do we need for those services,” Gammon said.

Action on this item was also tabled until the meeting.

The RSU hired the Maine School Management Association to conduct a superintendent search for the new district. MSMA will advertise for the position and collect resumes, then turn the hiring process over to RSU 56.

The new school district will become official July 1.

Another priority was to replace about 33 SMART boards at Dirigo Elementary School.

“The expected lifespan of around eight years has come and gone, and to start replacing these units, they’re not cheap — one unit is about $4,700,” Gammon said.

The board questioned whether some of the units can be refurbished rather than replaced.

* RSU 56 appointed Bruce Ross of Dixfield, Don Hutchins of Canton and Wayne Thurston of Peru to the Region 9 School of Applied Technology board, Gammon said.

The Region 9 board has 12 members from the sending schools of RSU 56, RSU 10 and RSU 44, and the towns of Andover, Byron, Upton and Gilead.

The next school board meeting is Tuesday, April 4, at 6:30 p.m. at Dirigo High School.
