TURNER — Shelby Cronkhite of Turner, a senior at Leavitt Area High School, has been selected to receive the 2017 Principal’s Award, Principal Eben Shaw announced yesterday.

The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.

“Since her freshmen year, Shelby has proven herself to be a strong student and engaged member of our school community,” Shaw said. “She has been president of her class for the last three years, successfully leading the group through countless class activities — at the same time, being involved in the NHS (National Honor Society) and maintaining the highest academic standards. Shelby is an outstanding student and an excellent role model for the students of our school and district.”

Shelby, Shaw and other award winners and their principals attended an Honors Luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor.

The Honors Luncheon recognized these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler, who were former Maine principals and executive directors of the Maine Principals Association. This year, an additional five $1,000 scholarships will be presented through the efforts of the MPA Scholarship Golf Tournament.

The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals and the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine’s school administrators.
