LEWISTON — Joseph Leroy Slattery, 84, of 37 Fair St., Lewiston, died Friday, April 14, at his home following a long illness.

Born in Wales on Aug. 14, 1932, he was the son of Edward David and Winifred Maxwell Slattery. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 until 1972, including tours in the Korean War, Vietnam War and Germany. He received many decorations and awards, including five Good Conduct Medals, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and two Overseas Service Bars. After his retirement from the Army, he returned to Lewiston and worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 27 years. On Dec. 21, 1996, he married Virginia May. Joseph was a member of Pastime, Midtown and Acme Social clubs, and American Legion Post 22.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia of Lewiston; the mother of his children, Ines Slattery of Fountain Inn, S.C.; his children, Lyndle and his wife, Betty, of Manhattan, Kansas; the Rev. William and his wife, Heather, of Enoree, S.C.; Susan Driscoll and her husband, Frederick, of Tega Cay, S.C.; and Joseph Jr. of Simpsonville, S.C.; brother, Carl Slattery and wife, Florence, of Litchfield; sister-in-law, Esther Slattery of Litchfield; brother, Orman Gayton of Oakland; stepdaughter, Alice May and her children, Azaraya and Alando, of Lewiston; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a son, David; brothers, Clifton Thomas and Roscoe Slattery; and sisters, Edna (Thomas) Dixon and June (Slattery) Danforth.
