LEWISTON — YWCA announces aquatic training classes. All classes will be held at 130 East Ave.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training — Session I: 6 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, May 19; 12:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 20; and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 21. Session II: 8 to 6 p.m., June 5 and 6. A new format allows participants age 15 and older, to become a certified lifeguard. Participants will spend 10 to 12 hours working at their own pace online, then demonstrate skills learned for prevention of injuries and rescue of swimmers, including the emergency skills of first aid and CPR. Prerequisites include completion of a 300-yard swim, treading water and timed deep water object removal. All components are valid for two years. The registration deadline for Session I is  Monday, May 8; Session II, Thursday, May 25. Participants must register with American Red Cross and pay additional fee of $35. Tuition: $150 for members; $175, nonmembers.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor — 7 a.m. to 4 p.m, Monay to Wednesday, July 3 to 6. The class will teach currently certified American Red Cross Lifeguards, age 17 and older, how to teach the lifeguard training course, including CPR/AED for professional rescuers and health care providers and first aid. Participants must pass skills review and written tests on the first day of class. Online learning required before the first day of class. Participants must register by Friday, June 23, with American Red Cross and pay additional fee of $35. Tuition: $225 for members; $250, nonmembers.

Water Safety Instructor — Session I: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Wednesday, June 5 to 7; Session II: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Wednesday, June 12 to 14.Teaches students age 16 years and older to teach the ARC program of swim instruction and basic water rescue. Proficiency in front crawl, back crawl, breast stroke, side stroke, elementary back stroke, and butterfly to American Red Cross Level IV standards is required. Must complete online ARC module at least a week prior to first day of class and pay additional fee of $35. Module link information will be given upon registration of the WSI class. Tuition: $375, members; $400, nonmembers. 

Basic Water Rescue — 1 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 3. This teaches participants nonswimming rescue skills necessary for childcare providers with pools less than 4 feet deep and less than 16 feet wide, where a nonswimming rescue is practical. This is also a class for parents and grandparents with pools or other open water. Tuition: $70, members; $80, nonmembers.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Water Front Module — 2:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 4. Participants must have current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate. The course will provide additional open water skills useful to those working at beaches or youth camps. Must register by Tuesday, May 30, with American Red Cross. Tuition: $75 for members; $85, nonmembers.

All fees will be refunded if a course is canceled. If a participant cancels two weeks prior to the course, a refund of all except a $75 administrative fee will be provided. If for some reason a participant does not pass the prerequisites, he or she will be offered the next available course. There will be no refund if a participant does not pass the prerequisites or drops out during the course. Space is limited.
