NEW SHARON —  A home on Kimball Pond Road was destroyed by fire early Friday morning.

Homeowner Michael Crespi was not at home when the fire broke out, New Sharon Fire Chief John Welch, said.

A neighbor, checking on horses stabled in a small barn near the house, reported the fire at 6:23 a.m., he said.  But, firefighters had no idea how long the fire had been burning.

The barn and horses were not harmed, he said.

Jeremy Damren, a State Fire Marshal’s Office Fire Investigator, was called in to help determine a cause for the fire.

Crespi said he was told the cause would likely not be found because of the extent of damage to the two story house.

The fire ravaged the house and was spreading in to the woods and burning a fence and strip of grassed lawn when fire fighters arrived, Welch said.

The house, located nearly a quarter mile drive from the dirt road in an open field area, was next to the woods.

Crespi said the home was fully insured and material items could be replaced. But the loss was difficult, he said as he walked up to see firefighters dousing the last spots of fire around 10 a.m.

Getting water to the scene posed an issue after a New Sharon fire truck loaded with water sank in to mud at the start of the driveway, Welch said.  A system of hoses was set up across the long driveway.  Firetrucks relayed water from a hydrant near the town office.

Mutual aid from Farmington, Industry and Temple provided enough manpower, he said.
