MONMOUTH — Earle G. Shettleworth Jr., Maine state historian, will present an illustrated lecture, “The Maine Home Front in World War I,” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, at Cumston Free Public Library.

The discussion will document the role played by Maine men and women in World War I, especially at home.

Previously unseen photographs, many of them real photo postcards of the period, tell the story of recruitment, troop departures, parades, bond drives, shipbuilding, war-related industries and knitting socks for soldiers.

A native of Portland, Shettleworth attended Deering High School, Colby College and Boston University. In 1971, he was appointed by Gov. Kenneth Curtis to serve on the first board of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, for which he became the architectural historian in 1973 and director in 1976.

Cumston Public Library programs are free and open to the public.
