LEWISTON — Ally Turner scored a memorable goal Friday against Lewiston.

Not only did the Messalonskee junior score the 150th goal of her career, but the milestone marker was the game-winner of an 11-10 overtime victory in a KVAC Class A North girls’ lacrosse game at Don Roux Field.

Turner’s fourth goal of the game came on a free-position shot 1:40 into the extra period for the win.

“Honestly, when I just saw the ball go in it was such a relief because just your adrenaline is going, and I love, love competing in close games,” Turner said. “It’s just like, honestly, every athlete’s dream to compete in a close game, go into OT, and score the game-winning goal. That’s what people dream about. It felt really nice, and it was really cool for it to be my 150th.”

Turner said she had “absolutely no clue” that the winning goal was also the 150th of her career, but she soon realized it when she was gifted the ball after the game.

She was given a chance to score that goal thanks to a rally by the Blue Devils (7-4), who came back from a 10-7 deficit to force overtime.

Sasha Leclair fed Christine Chasse to make it 10-8 with less than five minutes to play in regulation, then Leclair scored twice 45 seconds with less than three minutes to go to tie the game.

“The game that Sasha Leclair played — four goals, and just she dominated, I thought,” Lewiston coach Brant Remington said. “They had a hard time stopping her.”

Leclair scored all four of her goals after halftime, and all four came with Lewiston trailing.

Each of Turner’s goals gave the Eagles (10-1) the lead.

The first came 1:29 into the contest to make it 2-1 Messalonskee. After Morgan Eliasen scored 17 seconds in for Lewiston, Lydia Dexter tied it 38 seconds later. Dexter scored again 4:28 in for a 3-1 Eagles lead, with all three Messalonskee goals coming on free-position shots.

“Unfortunately, this season we have not really been a first-half team, so the fact that we even scored the three right after (Eliasen’s goal) is pretty good,” Messalonskee coach Crystal Leavitt said.

Chasse and Messalonskee’s Jenna Nash traded goals seven minutes in before the Blue Devils went on a 3-0 run. Abbie Langelier, Erin Lachance and Dacia Bail all found the back of the net to give Lewiston its first lead at 5-4.

Lauren Pickett scored for the Eagles to tie the game at half. Leclair missed wide on a free-position shot in the final seconds of the first half to keep the score knotted.

Leavitt said her squad has been a second-half team this season, and the Eagles showed that through the first 20 minutes of the second stanza. Turner, Dexter and Pickett all completed hat tricks to give Messalonskee a 10-7 lead with 5:35 left to play.

Remington said it took “some great leadership” to rally back.

“One of my captains, Julia St. Laurent — really I didn’t do much coaching the second half — she did a lot of that positive talk that sometimes I have to do, and she just took over and did it all,” Remington said.

That leadership, along with Leclair finding her scoring touch and the Blue Devils turning the tide on the draw, all combined to bring the Blue Devils back.

They had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Sophia Holmes stole a pass in Lewiston’s offensive end to give Messalonskee that chance. The Eagles never got a shot off, however, sending the game to overtime.

“I was nervous as a coach,” Leavitt said. “I knew that the girls were going to pull it through. That’s who they are. The girls pull through in critical moments.

“Losing isn’t really an option for some of these girls. They will dig, and obviously today was a showing of that. Lewiston gave us a good run, and my girls, at the end of the day, refused to lose.”

The Blue Devils held a 5-4 lead for the second time this season against Messalonskee — which is unbeaten in Class A North play — but couldn’t seal the deal either time. Friday’s game was closer, though, than the 10-5 loss on the road earlier this season.

“We’re probably going to meet them in the KVAC final, so the girls are walking out of here with a ton of confidence thinking we can beat them,” Remington said. “Maybe three time’s a charm.”
