PORTLAND — The momentum firmly in its favor, Yarmouth had one more chance to tie the game with less than 30 seconds on the clock — and a full timeout to think about it.

Instead of putting the ball in the back of the net, though, one of the Clippers’ passes sailed out of bounds, giving the ball back to Kennebunk.

The Rams ran out the clock and completed a 5-4 win over the Clippers in the Class B girls’ lacrosse state final on Saturday.

“We have a great offense, but our defense is where we’re strongest,” Kennebunk coach Annie Barker said. “They work really well together, and they’re just resilient.”

Leah Dumas and Erin Groton scored first-half goals for the Rams (13-2), who added one from captain gabby Fogg in the second and held on at the end against yarmouth’s furious attempt at a comeback.

“We started off slow, and then we just didn’t put it in the back of the net,” Yarmouth coach Dorothy Holt said. “Coming from behind is tough, but we rallied, we showd that we could. We just needed five more minutes.”

Ella Antolini led all players with three goals for the Clippers, including her third with 6:22 to play to pull her team within one.

But the Rams’ defense, led by keeper Mallory Burchill, was solid to the end.
