Heavy rains, strong winds, thunder and lightning swept through Maine on Saturday, washing out roads, downing trees and power lines, and damaging property.

The National Weather Service office in Gray said that as of 8:15 p.m., there were multiple reports of flash flooding that made some roads impassable. Wind gusts of up to 60 mph were reported in some areas, according to the office.

Road closures or washouts were reported in a number of towns, including Otisfield, Bridgton, Sweden and Denmark.

Otisfield Deputy Fire Chief Jared Damon said Rayville and Bell Hill roads were closed because of downed trees and broken power poles. A tree also toppled onto a house on Bell Hill Road, he said.

There were no reports of injuries, he said.

At Flagship Cinema on Route 26 in Oxford, rainwater was up to the doors of vehicles.

As of 8:45 p.m., Central Maine Power Co. reported nearly 4,000 customers were without power. More than 2,000 were in Cumberland County and nearly 1,500 were in Oxford County.

Several social media posts from around the region showed flash floods and downed trees across wires and roadways.
