Gray-New Gloucester sophomore Madison Post won the Class B state championship in the 200-meter dash and placed second in the 100.

The bigger the moment, the better Madison Post performs.

“She is a student-athlete that rises to the challenge,” Gray-New Gloucester coach Mike Griffin said. “She is a … gamer. When she’s asked to perform well, she does. When she goes up against the best competition, she performs her best.”

Post, a sophomore, says she finds motivation from the more important meets and the faster runners.

“I definitely tend to up my game when the competition is bigger, because that’s when it really counts,” Post said. “I’m very competitive. Once the bigger meets roll around, I really get to test myself and really push myself.”

Post really stepped up in the 4×100-meter relay at the Class B state championship meet last month. Running the anchor leg, she brought the Patriots back from about fifth place to win the state title.

“I just thought, OK, we came in third last year, so I thought I got to at least get third,” Post said. “Then I was in third and then I was in second, and then I was racing the girl in first place and I got her by my lean. It was unbelievable.”

“She just kept her form and put on the jets and they came down to the wire,” Griffin said.

“We have the confidence in her that, you know, she’s down a few steps she’s certainly going to be one that’s going to dig deep and give it her all.”

Post also placed first in the 200 and second in the 100. At the New England championships, she placed ninth in the 100 and 17th in the 200. She also placed ninth in Class B in the discus

All that, and she’s only a sophomore. And, Griffin says, Post is already figuring out the nuances of improvement.

“I think this year she’s realizing the training and the things and becoming more aware and more mature in terms of how she goes about her training and racing and things like that,” Griffin said.

“She’s kind of willing and maturing into kind of saying, ‘Oh, it’s not just ability, it’s also needing to put in the hard work, and consistency.’”
