PORTLAND — A South Paris woman was sentenced Monday in federal court for giving a gun to a felon.

U.S. District Court Judge George Z. Singal sentenced Stephanie Knightly, 50, to roughly two months (time Knightly has already served) behind bars.

Knightly bought a pistol in Scarborough on Aug. 16, 2014, as arranged by Steven Piirainen, someone known by Knightly to be a felon.

Piirainen accompanied Knightly to the place of the sale and gave her cash to purchase the pistol, according to a news release by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Portland.

Piirainen took possession of the firearm after the purchase.

Piirainen stole a truck the next day and engaged in a shootout with the Maine State Police in South Paris. He was shot and died.

Before the shootout, Piirainen had told Knightly that he knew his probation officer was planning to arrest him soon and that he was “never going back” to prison, according to the news release.
