100 years ago, 1917
Next Monday afternoon, Rev. Charles C. Chayer with a group of boys from Pine Street F. B. church will start on a five-days outing to Allen Pond, Greene, where they will occupy a small cottage which is hidden among the trees of a beautiful island. For a few days they will enjoy the finest of black-bass fishing, and can revel in the pleasures of a morning and evening dip. The entire equipment of each boy will be rolled in his blankets, and those will be slung over his shoulder in regular army style. Each boy who goes signs a slip, stating that he will give obedience while away, and the parents of each boy sign another slip, giving the pastor full control over the boys during the trip.

50 years ago, 1967
After being in business for 50 years at the same location, the Bailey Garage Inc. at 1 Center St., Auburn, has closed its doors and gone out of business. Gulf Oil Corp., with which the Bailey firm was associated for 50 years, has taken up an option on the Bailey garage and two adjacent structures. According to reports, the three structures and a five-car garage at the rear of the adjacent Plummer building are to be razed and a new Gulf gas station constructed on the site. Bailey’s garage has been in business at the present site since 1917, when Hiram H. Bailey, who observed his 79th birthday last month, purchased the property while serving in the U. S. Army.

25 years ago, 1992
Three Auburn organizations whose members use Taylor Pond in different ways will join together Saturday to clean up trash and debris in an effort to protect the pond and preserve its water quality. The Taylor Pond Association, the Taylor Pond Yacht Club and the Androscoggin County Fish and Game Association are holding the clean-up day both to preserve the quality of Taylor Pond as well as to let people know how strongly they feel about the need to preserve the environment, according to Susan Trask, spokesman for the groups’ Lake Week Committee. The activities are being held as part of the statewide observance of Lake Week, according to Trask.
