MEXICO — The Mexico Public Library will host lecturer, award-winning artist and historian Marina Forbes, who will offer two presentations on Russian culture in August.

The first, “Imperial Russian Faberge Eggs” on Thursday, Aug. 3, will feature a photo tour of the Faberge collection at the Faberge Museum in the Shuvalov Palace in St. Petersburg, the Kremlin Armory Museum in Moscow and other world famous museums.

Emphasis will be on the important role of egg painting in Russian culture and on the development of the unique art form, as well as the role of these eggs during the decline of the Romanov rule and through the Revolution.

The second, “Traditional Russian Folk Art: The Firebird in Russian Culture” on Friday, Aug. 4, will explore the “bird of light” that appears in many Russian legends and fairy tales. This program combines storytelling, traditional Russian music and the actual painting of authentic Russian firebird whistles.

While the presentations are free, the firebird workshop costs approximately $10 for supplies and is open to participants age 6 and older. 

Both presentations begin at 6 p.m. Children who are registered with the summer reading program and attend the firebird presentation/workshop will earn chances to win Storyland tickets.
