LEWISTON — A local man was charged with firing off rounds from a handgun Tuesday afternoon in a Bartlett Street neighborhood.

George A. Bothelo, 40, of 78 Maple St., was charged with reckless conduct with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon.
No one was hurt, police said, when Bothelo fired shots at about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Bartlett and Birch streets. Police sent to investigate the matter found the gun and seized it as evidence.
Bothelo was convicted in 2016 of domestic assault, which prohibits him from owning or possessing firearms. Police said he also was under an active protection from abuse order when he was arrested Tuesday.
Bothelo was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn where he remained Wednesday.
