Dance Band performing in August

BUCKFIELD — The Jones Dance Band will play at the Masonic Hall on Saturdays, Aug. 12, 19 and 26, from 7 to 10 p.m.

Admission is $5.

Androscoggin River History talk

GREENE — Greene Historical Society will explore the history of the Androscoggin River in “Life Along the Androscoggin River: Then and Now.” 

The presentation will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at the Old Town House, 98 Main St.

Participants will share stories about life along the Androscoggin River in Greene and learn about what it was like to live along the river years ago in comparison to today. The presentation will show where the remains of houses on the Greene side of Gulf Island Pond can be found, and who lived there.

Those who have pictures or videos are encouraged to bring and share them. The society will compile information for the archives.

Salves and Syrups workshop planned

LEWISTON — The Ark & Olive Garden Cafe will offer its fall herb class, “Salves and Syrups,” at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at 791 Lisbon St.

Jane Kuntz, a consultant and family herbalist, will teach how to make salves to protect skin from harsh cold and syrups to keep away colds and flu.

Participants will learn to make pine salve, calendula salve, lavender salve, and a gentle nourishing serum for the face. She will also show how to make elderberry syrup, an antiviral, and black currant syrup, which is a source of vitamin C and bioflavonoids.

Class members will also make bee balm oxymel, a remedy for colds, the flu and stomach viruses.

Registration is required. The $10 fee covers the cost of materials.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors 5K

LISBON FALLS — Lisbon United Methodist Church’s second annual Neighbors Helping Neighbors 5K Run/Walk will start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at 14 School St.

Registration for the timed event is open now through the day of the race; though forms must be received by Aug. 31 to receive a T-shirt.

The event is open to all ages. Child care and activities will be available for children of event participants. Same day registration opens at 8 a.m. and will take place rain or shine.

Entry fee is $25 a person. Proceeds will benefit Lisbon Area Christian Outreach Food Bank and Tedford Housing’s “Warm Thy Neighbor” programs.
