OAKLAND — Jack Wyman continued his stellar summer by earning a spot in the Maine Match Play Invitational championship at Waterville Country Club.
Oxford’s Joe Baker and Auburn’s Craig Chapman saw their runs end in Wednesday’s semifinal matches.
Wyman, this year’s Maine Amateur champ, started Wednesday by holding off Lance Bernier 1 up in the quarterfinals. Bernier rallied on the back nine, but Wyman birdied the 18th hole to earn the win.
Wyman then defeated Chapman 7 and 6 in the semifinals to reach the finals.
Baker, who plays out of Martindale Country Club, defeated fellow Martindale member Will Kannegieser, of Minot, in the quarterfinals. The match was all square before Baker won the final two holes to bounce last year’s runner-up, 2 up.
In the semis, Baker lost to Sam Grindle, 3 and 2.
Grindle and Wyman will face off in Thursday’s championship. Grindle opened Wednesday with three birdies and no bogeys in a 3 and 2 win over former Martindale member Andrew Slattery in the quarters.
Before facing Wyman, Chapman beat Tim Desmarais 3 and 2 to reach the semifinals for the second consecutive year.
