LEWISTON — SeniorsPlus has received a $10,000 grant from the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation to continue to develop a dining site and cooking classes, with interpretation and written translation, for older adult refugees in downtown Lewiston.

The program, which was launched this past year, focuses on cooking and sourcing nutritious food, including local farm food, as well as creating a hub for social interaction. SeniorsPlus will continue to work on the program with the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center and Healthy Androscoggin.

“We have enjoyed working with New Mainers older adults in Lewiston over the past year to better their familiarity with local food and to create a social hub,” said Betsy Sawyer-Manter, president and CEO of SeniorsPlus.

This grant is to support the continuation of the “Healthy Food for Every Age” grant that SeniorsPlus received from the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation last year. The program at SeniorsPlus was one of among 22 nonprofit initiatives that the foundation funded in Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire.
