PORTLAND — In the first test of the revised gambling statutes, MemoryWorks — a small nonprofit that serves seniors with dementia — has initiated the Great State of Maine Cribbage Tournament with more than a dozen playoff locations and more than 150 players. The event is a major fundraiser for MemoryWorks.

“It’s our inaugural year. I just wish I had been able to cover the entire state this time around. This is a great start for a great cause and a whole lot of family fun style of cribbage,” said MemoryWorks founder Ken Capron. Capron estimates the GSMCT will be fully statewide within a year. MemoryWorks will be offering a Cabin-Fever Cribbage Challenge in late winter.

Local dates, times and locations include: Tuesday, Sept. 12, 5 p.m., Magic Lantern, the Tannery Pub, Bridgton; Thursday, Sept. 21, 5 p.m., Fairgrounds Cafe, Topsham Fair Mall; Sunday, Sept. 24, Baxter Brewing, Lewiston. The entry fee is $25 and players may register.

County championships will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at a venue to be announced. The state championship matches will be held at 11 a.m. the same day and place.
