PARIS — The week of Sept. 24 to 30 is Banned Books Week, the annual celebration of the freedom to read. Public libraries honor the First Amendment, freedom of speech, and do not ban books. Various people and institutions, however, have chosen to generate lists of books for children, juveniles and young adults that they deem inappropriate.

To assist in making adults and parents aware of the content of selections in children’s literature that have shown up on banned book lists, the Paris Public Library will conduct a “Banned Book Challenge.”

The challenge will run from Sept. 24 to Oct. 24. Participants will select and read books from a display that will include banned books for children, juveniles and young adults. Participants will also take home and fill out a short survey regarding their choice(s) that will be returned with each book. Participants may read as many books and submit as many surveys as they wish.

On Wednesday, Oct. 25, a random drawing from the surveys collected will take place. The prize will be a $30 gift certificate a book store.
